Concrete vs Wooden Fence Posts: Which Should You Choose?

One of the most common questions we get at our Wednesbury yard is: should I use concrete or wooden fence posts? Both work. The right answer depends on how long you want the fence to last, your budget, and the look you're going for.

The short answer

If you want the longest-lasting fence with the least maintenance, use concrete fence posts with concrete gravel boards. If you want a fully natural look and you're happy re-treating timber every few years, use wooden posts.

Lifespan

Concrete posts easily last 25+ years and won't rot at ground level. Pressure-treated wooden posts typically last 10–15 years — sometimes less on wet or clay soil where the base sits damp.

Strength in wind

Concrete posts with steel reinforcing bars barely move in high winds. Wooden posts flex more, and their weak point is always where they enter the ground.

Cost

Wooden posts are cheaper up front. Once you factor in the second and third replacement over 25 years, concrete usually works out cheaper overall.

Looks

Wooden posts look more natural and warmer. Concrete is more industrial — but paired with a good rock-face gravel board and quality overlap or feather-edge panels, it looks smart and stays smart.
