How to Measure Your Garden for Fence Panels

Getting the measurements right is the single biggest thing you can do to avoid a wasted delivery. Here's how we tell customers at our Wednesbury yard to do it.

Step 1: Measure the total run in metres

Walk the fence line with a tape and measure from corner to corner. Note down each straight section separately.

Step 2: Divide by 1.83m (6ft)

Standard UK fence panels are 6ft (1.83m) wide. Divide each straight run by 1.83 and round up to the next whole panel.

Step 3: Add one post per panel, plus one

Six panels in a row needs seven posts. Corners and ends need corner or end posts — not slotted posts.

Step 4: Add a gravel board per panel

Every panel should sit on a concrete gravel board. It stops the panel rotting and doubles its life.

Worked example

A 20m back garden fence: 20 ÷ 1.83 = 10.9, round up to 11 panels. That's 11 panels, 12 posts (or 10 slotted + 2 end posts), 11 gravel boards.
